How AI Agents Can Work Inside Business Processes
An AI agent is software that interprets a task, retrieves context, and takes actions using a defined set of tools. In business processes, agents work best with a narrow job, scoped permissions, and human approval for sensitive actions.
Give agents a narrow job
"Triage incoming inquiries" works. "Run operations" does not. Narrow scope makes behavior predictable and testable.
Expose tools, not open access
Agents should call specific tools, such as look up a customer or draft a reply, through controlled interfaces like MCP rather than having raw access to systems.
Keep people in the loop
For writes and sends, the agent proposes, rules validate, a person approves, and the system executes and logs.
